Structural Board Association - Representing the OSB Industry

Research on OSB

The Forintek-ARC Consortium in Composites directs and coordinates a major market-driven research and development program to enhance the performance of the OSB product and the industry alike. From time to time SBA awards research contracts to other research institutions in Canada and the U.S. The following are completed research projects on OSB:

  1. Optimization of Pressing Parameters
  2. On Line MSR Testing of OSB by Flexure
  3. Wood pH and Resin Bonding of Strands
  4. Resin Spot Size and Variability on OSB Properties
  5. Reducing Stain Bleed Through on OSB Underlay
  6. Improved Durability with Borates
  7. Surface Staining and Strand Species
  8. Resin and Wax Distribution on Strands
  9. Inside Mill Air Quality
  10. Density Profile and Thickness Swell - Southern Yellow Pine
  11. Optimization of Wax Addition
  12. Log Yard Management
  13. Performance Improvement from Long Strands
  14. Minimization and Control of VOCs
  15. Modelling of Thickness Swell Relationship
  16. Modelling of Mat Formation and Pressing
  17. Adhesives for Mixed Hardwood OSB
  18. Optimization of Strand Alignment
  19. Improvements in Strand Geometry
  20. Long-Term Performance Determination
  21. Fundamentals of Thickness Swelling

At times, when requested by the Technical Committee to assess its members' product performance, the SBA conducts a round robin testing of select physical OSB panel properties such as thickness and edge swell, water absorption, panel density and mat weight variability.
